The tradable stocks have different underlying assets:
The biggest difference is that the "subject matter" can be purchased differently. Customers with mainland securities accounts can purchase all A-shares listed on the Shanghai Stock Exchange and Shenzhen Stock Exchange, but customers with Hong Kong securities accounts can only buy and sell specific eligible stocks when buying A-shares through the Shanghai and Shenzhen Stock Connect channels. There are currently around 1500 eligible stocks on the Shanghai Stock Connect and Shenzhen Stock Connect.
The tradable stocks on the Shanghai Stock Connect include:
1) Component stocks of the SSE 180 Index;
2) Component stocks of the SSE 380 Index;
3) A+H shares listed on the Shanghai Stock Exchange.
But it does not include the following stocks:
(a) Shanghai stocks that are not traded in RMB;
(b) Shanghai stocks subject to risk warning (ST and * ST stocks)
The tradable stocks on Shenzhen Stock Connect include:
1) Component stocks of the Shenzhen Component Index with a market value of no less than RMB 6 billion;
2) Component stocks of the Shenzhen SME Innovation Index with a market value of no less than RMB 6 billion;
3) A+H shares listed on the Shenzhen Stock Exchange
But it does not include the following stocks:
(a) Shenzhen stocks that are not traded in RMB;
(b) Deep stocks subject to risk warning or delisting arrangements.
